How Does the Standard Days Method of Family Planning Work?

The Standard Days Method® is a fertility awareness-based method. For cycles that are 26 to 32 days long, it identifies days 8 through 19 as potentially fertile. CycleBeads helps you track your cycle, monitor that your cycles are in the appropriate range for using this method, and know which days you can get pregnant and which days you are unlikely to get pregnant.

The method was developed and tested in efficacy trials by researchers at the Institute for Reproductive Health at Georgetown University.  It is more than 95% effective at preventing pregnancy when used correctly and 88% effective with typical use. See more about the Standard Days Method in the Research section.

People around the world choose CycleBeads because it is:

• Effective for preventing and planning pregnancy

• Side-effect free

• Easy to use

• Inexpensive

• Educational & empowering

How to Prevent Pregnancy with CycleBeads

To prevent pregnancy using CycleBeads, avoid intercourse or use condoms on fertile days (cycle days 8 through 19).The patented CycleBeads tools help you use this method by tracking your cycle, identifying your fertile and non-fertile days based on when your period started, and confirming that your cycles are in range for effective use of this family planning method.

How to Plan Pregnancy with CycleBeads

To plan a pregnancy using CycleBeads, have frequent intercourse, 2-3 times per week, especially during cycle days 8 through 19*.  It generally takes one to three months to conceive.  If you are not pregnant after 6 months of trying, it is recommended that you consult your doctor for a fertility evaluation.

* Some researchers have said that couples should have intercourse every other day (vs. every day) to ensure that sperm counts are high. Others have found that sperm counts are adequate even if a couple has intercourse every day during the fertile time and that success rates may be slightly higher.

Who Can Use This Family Planning Method?

CycleBeads is most effective when menstrual cycles are regularly between 26 and 32 days long. The CycleBeads and the CycleBeads smartphone apps help you monitor your cycle length so that you know whether your cycles are in this range. If your cycles are outside this range, you should use a different family planning method to prevent pregnancy. If you are uncertain about the length of your cycle, please see How to determine the length of your cycle in the FAQ section to find out more.
